Coatings for Sustainable and Circular Food Packaging
The degradation of food products due to the permeation of oxygen and moisture through packaging materials represents a critical issue within the agri-food supply chain, with direct impacts on shelf life and food waste.
This project aims to develop advanced packaging solutions for both rigid and flexible formats, through the implementation of innovative materials and technologies capable of delivering high barrier properties and antimicrobial functionality.
The activities include the functionalization of polyolefins by incorporating bio-based additives, such as nanocellulose, to create mono-material structures with intrinsic barrier properties—overcoming the recyclability limitations of current multilayer films. In parallel, active coatings based on natural extracts with antimicrobial activity will be developed, designed to modulate the release of active substances depending on environmental conditions and the characteristics of the food product.
These solutions will be integrated through innovative deposition technologies, including atmospheric plasma treatments and functional coatings applicable also to metallic substrates, as a replacement for current hexavalent chromium-based passivation. In this context, the technological suitability of an innovative coating called CFPA (Chrome Free Passivation Alternative) in contact with food products will be evaluated.
The suitability of the developed solutions will be validated through overall and specific migration tests, chemical-physical material analyses, and shelf-life assessments on selected food matrices.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) evaluations will also be conducted to determine the environmental, social, and economic sustainability throughout the entire supply chain, including end-of-life considerations.
The project targets the achievement of a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 6, with pilot-scale trials and the direct involvement of industrial partners for validation and potential scalability of the proposed technologies.
