Validation of metal packaging coated with environmentally friendly coatings.
REALIZZAZIONE DI IMBALLAGGI METALLICI RIVESTITI CON COATING A BASSO IMPATTO AMBIENTALE E SULLA SALUTE DEI LAVORATORI
Project Objectives:
To study the characteristics and performance of a new chromium-free passivation called CFPA (Chromium-Free Passivation Alternative) for tinplate intended for food use, in comparison to the currently used hexavalent chromium-based passivation, code 311.
To validate, through pilot line packaging tests and shelf-life studies, including under accelerated testing conditions, the performance of metal cans made with CFPA passivation and filled with two different food products (tomato purée and chickpeas in brine).
Objectives Achieved:
- Definition of the chemical-physical characteristics of flat laminates produced with CFPA passivation, both uncoated and coated, as well as of the related metal cans intended for food packaging.
- Determination of the corrosion resistance of coated flat materials and cans. These accelerated corrosion resistance tests made it possible to evaluate the CFPA coating’s ability to ensure good adhesion of organic coatings and adequate chemical resistance when in contact with model solutions simulating the aggressiveness of an acidic food product and a sulfur-containing food product.
This project is funded by the European Funds of the Emilia-Romagna Region.
