Supervision to Identify Key Sustainability Aspects in the Life Cycle of Packaging with Innovative Coatings
Questo WP viene in coda agli altri poiché la sua finalità sarà quella di:
- Identify the most relevant sustainability aspects—covering environmental, economic, and social dimensions—throughout the life cycle of three types of packaging with innovative coatings developed within the project, in order to define further improvement options in the subsequent phase of full industrialization.
- Integrate environmental assessment with specific indicators of criticality and circularity, by adopting the methodology developed under the H2020 ORIENTING project (https://orienting.eu). Naturally, the sustainability evaluation will focus on three food-grade packaging solutions with different applied coatings. The assessment will be conducted on the complete packaging systems rather than the coatings alone, as this approach better reflects their functional value in terms of the shelf life of the packaged food products.
Project Objectives:
- Assess, through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the environmental impact, criticality (presence of Critical Raw Materials, as defined by the European Commission, across the packaging life cycle), and circularity (index measuring the degree of circularity of materials used in the packaging life cycle). 2. Evaluate the most material (i.e. significant, as defined in sustainability reporting) social aspects.
Project Objectives:
- Three Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) reports will be produced, following the methodology of the H2020 ORIENTING project.
- One report for each of the three packaging solutions using the innovative coatings developed in the project, identifying the most relevant aspects related to environmental impact, material criticality, circularity, and social dimensions across their full life cycle—from raw material extraction to end-of-life.
