Development of Biobased Polymeric Coatings Containing Cellulose Nanocrystals

Project Objectives:

  1. Development of innovative and sustainable polymer-based packaging functionalized to enhance barrier properties using biobased coatings containing cellulose nanocrystals (CNC).

  2. Optimization of CNC coating application aimed at achieving packaging that is functionally effective and highly sustainable, including during end-of-life recycling.

  3. Optimization of the properties of the biobased coated material in relation to the performance requirements for preserving selected food products identified by industrial partners.

Objectives Achieved:

  • Optimization of the formulation and production process for the coating solutions;
  • Optimization of the PLA functionalization phase using cold plasma and of the coating application via bar-coating technique;
  • Improved oxygen barrier properties in PLA samples coated with chitosan- and CNC-based formulations.

This project is funded by the European Funds of the Emilia-Romagna Region.
